The Technical Teapot:
Making and Joining Many Parts

Introduction

The Technical Teapot: Making and Joining Many Parts is an exploration of how to build functional and sculptural pieces by joining together a selection of both thrown and hand built parts. The teapot is a classic example - to get a successful marriage of body, spout and handle requires technical skill and an aesthetic eye. But this process can be applied to all sorts of sculptural forms. This intensive is all about developing both the skills and the eye to make work that extends beyond simple forms.

Dates

October 30 - November 5, 2025

Content

We will begin by reviewing a variety of pieced forms and discussing how they were put together, and what makes them successful. Then over the course of the studio days, we will work on building a series of composite objects. For those interested in functional work, we’ll focus on teapots, jars, and pitchers. For those interested in sculptural work, the exploration will be more open. We will address both wheel thrown and hand built options.

This course is best suitable for those with a strong working knowledge of clay.
