I wrote my first 'manifesto' over a year ago. At the time, it was defensive. I was trying to sum up - to explain to my detractors - why I thought it was okay to drop out of the rat race and do art full time. Since then, I have learned a whole lot about myself. Some of it was news to me. Some of it was simply polishing up what I already knew about myself. So this time, my manifesto tries to capture the 7 mantras of Chandra Rice!
enthusiasm multiplies joy
This is a concept that my sister and I came up with years ago. The basic idea is the more that you respond - to an idea, to a conversation, to a situation - with enthusiasm, the more that everyone (including yourself) feels joy. My enthusiasm will increase not only my joy in a situation but also yours. The opposite flatness quietness reticence tends to dial joy. We live in a culture that encourages us to be distant. To be contained. To avoid being eager or Pollyanna. To be discerning.
The point is to find the joke the sarcasm the distance from the situation rather than the closeness. To express enthusiasm is to also express connection. If you find joy in it ,I find joy in it. this is a fundamental form of reaching out and sharing. It has the advantage of increasing our joy. And our connection. This is how I hope respond to my friends and family when they share their joy in their passions with me. When in doubt, I want to be expressive rather than silent. I believe if more of us expressed Our enthusiasm, Joy would be multiplied worldwide.
